Observed Fault: The engine experiences sudden power loss, sluggish acceleration, and emits excessive black smoke, especially when the loader attempts to lift or push heavy material.

Diagnosis and Solution: This symptom is highly indicative of a turbocharger system failure or a severe boost leak (insufficient air supply). The C15 ACERT relies heavily on the turbo system for power.

• Step 1: Check Intake/Exhaust Leaks: Inspect all boost pressure hoses and clamps from the compressor outlet, through the intercooler, to the intake manifold for leaks. A loose clamp can cause significant power loss.

• Step 2: Inspect Turbocharger Integrity: Shut down the engine and remove the intake piping. Visually inspect the compressor wheel and shaft for damage (bent blades, excessive play). Damage here means the turbocharger core replacement (CHRA) is required. Many of the CATERPILLAR units listed above, like the 403680-0023, share common CHRA numbers like 406614-0002.
