The Garrett GT1749V is a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) introduced in 1998 for 1.9 TDI PD engines. Its nickel-chromium turbine wheel survives exhaust temps up to 860 °C. The VNT vanes rotate to reduce effective area at low rpm, creating higher exhaust gas velocity and quicker spool; at high rpm vanes open to avoid over-boost. A built-in over-pressure valve protects the engine. Regular maintenance: change oil every 10 000 km, use low-ash oil (VW 505.01), clean EGR and intake every 40 000 km to prevent carbon build-up.
